After fall of the Acid House

here are the pioneers of Acid Basement. With a special taste of Anarcho-Jazz. And a little Melt-Banana feeling. Sometimes like a Japanese noise „rock” brigade from the 80s. Miraculous muddle by Guerilla Toss

„Sur le toit” i.e. On The Rooftops. It’s a very special album by two French musicians King Automatic and Mr. Verdun. King Automatic is a rock and roll one-man band, Mr. Verdun is from the folk punk duo Thee Verduns. They have written music for a real film noir, a documentary about French prison mutinies in the early 70s. Plain, cold and dark ballades, sometimes in Western style, some of them are like instrumental Tom Waits’ songs. Down by French law

After a bloody hostage-taking in the end of 1971 at Clairvaux Prison* all prisoners got general punishment in France. It led to a mutiny in Nancy in January. The prisoners protested against the cruel treatment, the harsh conditions, and sudden removal of the Christmas packages. They weren’t real criminals, rather poor and desperate young men without future, who were incarcerated owing to petit crimes. They occupied the building – which is the centre of the city – and went up to the rooftops, from where they held the connection with the outside world. Outside the gate an organization for the penalty reform led by philosopher Michel Foucault and other intellectuals tried to intervene on behalf of them. The revolt was put down, but it evoked over thirty riots at other prisons.

*Clairvaux Prison lays on the site of the former Cistercian Abbey. It was turned into prison by the Revolution which demolished the Bastille.
There were lots of fanzine in Hungary in the late 80s and 90s. In our new series we cut album reviews out from these.

Straight Edge came from Győr. It was a relatively long-lived fanzine in the 90s. Its last issue(s?) was released together with Második Látás.

The Revco comes forward with more and more shameless, looser and better music from record to record. Of course with such a crew as that is working with Jourgensen… There are the big part of Ministry, Chris Connelly (Ministry, Murder Inc, Pigface), Louis Svitek (M.O.D. , Mindfunk, Pigface) Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard, Pigface, Tomahawk), Timothy Leary, etc. If Rod Stewart listened to his Do Ya Think I’m Sexy from Revco, then he surely made a mess under himself in his joy, or in his pain.

Sweet & dynamic punk rock and roll in the manner of 60s’ girl groups and Ramones by The Shanghais with members of No Bunny’s backing band, Primitive Hearts and Pookie & The Poodlez. Their music comes Hunx & His Punx to my mind

Amazing heavy psychedelic space rock by White Hills. It has started in New York in the early 2000s, because Dave W. (guitar) was dissatisfied for previous bands and decided to start his own one. In the early recordings he played on every instrument alone, but then has found a fix mate, the bassist Ego Sensation. Dave W. was also discontented with the audience in the US, so they went to tour in Europe, where are roots of their Hawkwind, Pink Faires, PIL, NEU! and Amon Düül II influenced music. The first White Hills album on label released in 2005 by Julian Cope’s Fuck Off & Di Records in England. Since then they have been releasing their works continuously by various labels. And they are a really active band. Their second album (which was self-released on limited edition CD in 2007) will be re-released in August

Extended, almost 26 minutes long live version of The Speed Of Fear by English alternative rock band Gallon Drunk from their recent album The Soul Of The Hour is free to download. A 7 minutes long version:
Have you any idea of it?
Please let me introduce Kirik Cizgi to you.
It’s a keyboard-bass-drums trio with post punk inspired irrational melodic structures.
In Koppány’s view: „They are a bit like cooler No Wave bands like Bush Tetras or Talking Heads. But when I hear them I always have Czech bands in my mind,
like Psí Vojaci, Uz Jsme Doma, or sometimes the Russian N.O.M. (the early).
But Csikar had right when he said, ‘the Turkish Dragibus’, which is true for a few songs.”

„Take me far from everyone.” A social extrovert wax witch with keyboards and guitar plays party punk. But I would go away from that party after 10 min, because his songs are cruelly long on this album. Above 3 min! But he hasn’t enough talent to do such things. He should stay under 3 min.

Futeisha, a brand new project on the flourishing Italian psychedelic scene. It’s a solo effort of psychedelic rock band La Piramide di Sangue guitarist Juan Francisco Scassa. He is not alone sure. His mates are from such great rock band as Movie Star Junkies and Vernon Sélavy. Instead of rock they play mystical mish-mash folk, or „Occultism and Kebab.”
„Dannato” cassette on Brigadisco (Italy) and Old Bicycle Records (Switzerland). Cover art by Paula H. Satán (of JC Satán). It based on an engraving of Pieter Bruegel the elder.
Futeisha. In Japanese: Outlaws. It was an anarchist group in the early 1920s. Its two leaders was sentenced to death for high treason, but it was changed to life imprisonment. The woman tore the pardon letter up and refused to say thank the emperor. She committed suicide in the cell at her age of 23. The man released after 22 years in 1945, later became a North-Korean politician.

Kim Deal has fed up (with banana – how the Hungarians say), quit the Pixies for a while and teamed up with 3 crazy women. The outcome is a wonderful album. The influence of Pixies is perceptible here and there but it doesn’t typical. The record is lots ruder and harder than any Pixies album. I get excited from that how the guitarist caress the strings. And Kim proves: she is not only a good bassist but her voice is splendid and is also good at lyrics.
Note: The fourth crazy woman was a man. Breeders have started as a project of Kim Deal and Tanya Donelli (Throwing Muses) in 1990. Later Jospehine Wiggs (Perfect Disaster) joined them on bass. Immediately before the recordings the sound engineer Steve Albini recommended Britt Walford (Slint) as drummer, who was playing on the album under the pseudonym Shannon Doughton.
