In the mid-eighties, defying local regulations that prohibited illegal filmmaking, Lucile Chaufour shot Super8 material about a group of Hungarian punks and how they were struggling under the communist regime. More than twenty years later, she returned several times to interview the same people about what it was like to be a punk in Hungary, what punk stood for back then and how it has changed since and also how they see life in Hungary before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Is this what they struggled for?
The Hungarian premiere of your film EAST PUNK MEMORIES will take place today at the Toldi cinema in Budapest. Can you sum up briefly what the film is about?

The film is about punk, life and, of course, politics: Hungarian punk was highly political, as they were fighting against the regime with their own means. To leave out politics completely and just to focus on the music would not have been respectful to those involved.
You did a lot of interviews between 2005 and 2011 with the same people you filmed in the mid-80s. Tell us about the way you edited the film.
I tried to show all the range of opinions and memories and not focus on one side, that’s how I could respect as much as possible the different visions. This film is about being able to talk and to hear different points of view on a situation. What is very interesting is that from a group of friends in the 80s, all positions are now represented: from left to right, and also those who do not want to take sides or do not want to deal with politics. It’s a collective portrait where each statement is reinforced, developed or contradicted by the next one. That’s the way I chose to give an authentic picture of the situation, rather than a „black and white” judgment.
The film presents a kaleidoscope view, with no censorship. Is this what you wanted to do?
Yes, I like the authentic way each character speaks: it is direct. Somehow, this is what remains from the punk years: to stand honestly for what you believe in, what you remember of that time, and I respect that. Part of the interviews were done in 2005, maybe some individuals have changed their points of view since then, but this is part of life. This film is a snapshot of a group of old punks at a certain moment of their life, about 25 years after the first shooting done in Super8 in the mid 80’s.
I know the film has been in the making for a long time. What hurdles have you had to overcome to complete the movie?
The film took very long to finish because we had quite no budget for it. No money means that you have to invest much more time and personal energy. Up until March 2013, all the screenings were done with a working copy because I could not pay for the final mix (5+1) and color correction. I got a lot of debts on it, but I’m happy we could finish the film and finally show the final version in Budapest.
Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Any final words?
The test screening at the Toldi cinema was very good. I’m very happy to show the film there, along with the gigs, and thanks to all the people who supported the project in Hungary.

The Slovenly is one of the most important “underground” record labels which focusing on “the best garage and punk shit rock” all over the planet. The story has begun under the name of 702 Records in Reno (Nevada) in 1994. The US Post has changed the area codes and 702 no longer belonged to the whole state of Nevada, just Las Vegas, so the label was renamed to Slovenly Recordings in 2002. They have offices in Spain, Holland and even Pennsylvania.
“really hard to get around is that it usually takes 10+ years for a band to get the attention they deserve”The editor’s note: you can find a fine video under link of every mentioned band!
It seems that after the indie rock scene’s hip status, now it’s garage rock becoming the coolest type of rock music. What do you think about it?
I’m not really sure what to think, because what is garage rock? There are some bands playing under that banner that definitely don’t belong. I had the pleasure of working with Buck Ormsby, founder of Etiquette Records (and bassist of the The Fabulous Wailers, a garage rock band between 1958-1969 – editor’s note) in March when we had THE SONICS (influential garage rock band between 1960-68. Reunited. – e.n.) play our 20th anniversary party in Reno. He said that he had discovered them in a garage in Bellingham. That’s where the term comes from… the implication that remains for me is real, raw, budget, rock’n’roll. How someone like Jacco Gardner (plays baroque pop – e.n.) fits into that is beyond me… Maybe we should also ask THE PENETRATORS… the self-proclaimed „Kings of Basement Rock” (It’s a legendary punk band from the 70’/80’s. Reunited – e.n.) They probably have some ideas about their garage rock cousins, har!
When you started Slovenly Records what was different in the garage rock scene?
Well, bands like the OBLIVIANS and TEENGENERATE were still playing to pretty small crowds… we also had THE GORIES play our party and they were telling me about how hard they worked in the 90s, and about how often they played to 10-20 people in Detroit. Things have changed a lot, but a recurring theme that I’ve realized is really hard to get around is that it usually takes 10+ years for a band to get the attention they deserve. Only those who work relentlessly and have someone with money backing them up get somewhere more quickly. BLACK LIPS is a good example. They busted their asses hard for years with Vice (an international magazine – e.n.) backing them up. When I started Slovenly they were playing house parties in Atlanta.

David Lynch’s second album, The Big Dream comes out in middle of July by Sunday Best (Europe) and Sacred Bones (USA). The songs stand on the basis of blues, among them is a Bob Dylan cover from 1963: Ballad of Hollis Brown, but it is „not really a cover of Bob Dylan as much as it is a cover of a Nina Simone cover of Bob Dylan” – said Lynch. Paul Bostaph (drums) has rejoined the Slayer on a full-time basis. He appeared on Slayer albums Divine Intervention, Undisputed Attitude, Diabolus In Musica and God Hates Us All. He replaced Dave Lombardo, who was dropped from the Slayer in February following a contractual disagreement with Kerry King and Tom Araya, but was hoping the situation could be resolved. Lombardo had heard the news about his permanent replace online. And after death of Jeff Hanneman there is a new guitarist too: Gary Holt from Exodus.

It started in 2006 as a parody of the „National Day of Prayer.” On that day
