Don Howland, The Bassholes

Thanx Don.

ps: At first there were the legendary Gibson Bros. in Ohio in the mid-80s. They played a unique mix of American roots music: blues, gospel, hill- and rockabilly with punk attitude. After split of the Gibsons the Bassholes were founded in 1992 by a “Gibson”, Don Howland (guitar) and Bim Thomas (aka Obnox, drums). But now on drums: James Owen (Burning Bus, Doom Ribbons, Wooden Tit) & keyboard: Kim Roney (The Family Swaggards, Rip & Run).

Are you intereseted in revolution?

The Civil Rights struggle has gotten this treatment in particular. Its now been ossified as a series of marches and sit-ins which led to the overturning of the most glaring US racial inequalities, and which culminated in the the martyrdom of Martin Luther King Jr. With the riots following MLKs assassination, and the malaise following his death, „the movement” lost its hope, drive, and focus.

But Civil Rights was never just the monolith of angry Malcolm vs. peaceful Martin, and the history channel wants the population to forget that the „movement” was radicalized beyond what is generally understood.

In the 60’s therefore, the nation stood on the precipice of some kind of revolution. In many ways, the country experienced a civil war.

invaders

The INVADERS of Memphis were like an intellectual street gang with incredible style, who devoted themselves to justice and confronting white supremacy. A group or „gang” of organizers, they were on the front lines of the struggle in the South, and experienced extraordinary harassment, violence, and imprisonment. They conducted the last meeting with King at the Lorraine Motel before he was murdered, and yet their story is almost unknown.

Primitive Calculators were always outsiders in Melbourne’s punk scene

pc2

Synth punk Primitive Calculators have started in 1978 in same place and same time than the Birthday Party. After a single they relocated to London, in same time than the Birthday Party, and promptly broke up in 1980. But there was a post-split-up single under the name of  Zye Ye Ye in England in 1981. The first album was released in 1980. And there was a film Dogs in Space in 1986, in it they play Pumping Ugly Muscle. Also a single was released. Then they have reformed in 2009 at the request of Nick Cave for the first All Tommorrow’s Pary in Australia. Second album The World Is Fucked was released in 2013. And now here is a new single by Emotional Response (US, Flagstaff, Arizona).

Fucker, Friends & Family

Fucker is a Japanese musician, the founder of Less Than TV, an outsider record label, which tends to be even more outsider than usual. He plays weird folk punk alone, and as a member of Folk Shock Fuckers with his wife Blue Yukari from all-girls ni-hao! („just like Melt-Banana with Cibo Matto with Boredoms with Takako Minekawa with OOIOO with Omoide Hatoba”) on bass, and Takeda Kazunaga, who plays on Cajon, a Peruvian box shaped percussion instrument.

First song from Fucker debut album, will released on 20 April, second one (In My Riffle) from Folk Shock Fuckers debut from 2014, it has been re-released now by Aussie label Tenzenmen. Listen to the full album

Noise In My Head: Voices From the Ugly Australian Underground

Preach The Blues (Up Jump The Devil)

„Music has been the only constant thing in my life.”

Stomping Nick Jackman is a one-man-band from Lyttelton (Delaney Davidson also from there), New Zealand, who fuses primitive garage punk with rhythm and blues, boogie-woogie and Appalachian folk. The latter merges the Black, English, Irish and Scotch music traditions with the coal miners’ joy, sorrow and anger. And what is boogie-woogie? The phrase maybe comes from Bantu term „Mbuki Mvuki”. Mbuki: „to take off in flight”; Mvuki: „to dance wildly, as if to shake off one’s clothes”.

stompnick

„I have tried to get a band like the Blues Grenade together with other people in the past but found it hard to find people who could understand the primitive blues aesthetic.” So he sings and plays harmonica, guitar and drums all at the same time, the old school way, without the aid of loop pedals, backing tracks, or any of those other fancy tricks. „The one-man-bands Joe Hill Louis and Doctor Ross are big influences – my act is based on these two artists.” But „The Gun Club would have had the biggest influence on me. Jeffrey Lee Pierce is the prophet. ”

BULBUL AVANT MUTANT

Bülbüls are a family of medium sized songbirds. In general they are resistant to human pressures on the environment and are tolerant of disturbed habitat. The song of the Bulbul is described as „the most unattractive noises made by any bird”.

BULBUL started as a one-man band in Wels, Upper-Austria, when Raumschiff Engelmayr, outfitted with guitar, drumcomputer and vacuum cleaner released a CD with a 600g handmade steelcover and began playing concerts disguised as space-indian. Then a bassplayer and two jazz reeds joined, then reeds quit, and a drummer has come. One of the most interesting bands in Austria.

Being a female musician: it’s really fun, but sometimes lonely

Keel Her / Claire Cottrill split cassette

keelher_cottrill

Keel Her aka Rose Jayne Keeler-Schäffeler is a London based alien-obsessed hyperactive girl from Brighton. Makes high standard lo-fi sometimes noisy bedroom pop. And managed by Satan. In 2012 the godfather of lo-fi, and World Champion of DIY home recordings, R. Steevie Moore invited her to play together at his studio in Memphis. And she is in The Bin Bags where playing violin, keys and vocals. Just released their first EP on Permanent Slump Records. (The third song in this playlist is from them.) She said in an interview: Being a female musician: it’s really fun, but sometimes lonely. I’m an outsider, but I always have been, regardless.

Claire Cottrill is a very young girl from Boston (Massachusetts, US). With her guitar she makes music under the influence of sixties soul and r’n’b and Korn.

Hi there, here is Jonnie from the kitchen

Scottish electronic musician Jonnie Common has gone to his kitchen and made an album using only noises what he has found there. Here is an album preview

He’s releasing the album on a set of four hand-made fridge magnets. Each one of these magnets is unique because they were all cut directly out of a stomach-churning 80s cookbook. He says: inside each set, I have even gone to the trouble (and believe me it was painstaking) of including the name of the dish from which each magnet was taken. I must stress that the combinations (or menus) were chosen for what looked good together rather than what would taste good together but I did spread it out so that every set includes 4 different types of dish. The categories are: soups, salads & starters, meat dishes, poultry dishes, fish dishes, vegetable dishes, supper dishes, savouries & snacks, puddings & desserts, cakes & baking.

Kitchen Synch is going to be released on Song, by Toad Records on May 9th.

Black & Green

In my mind there are some cases when a band suddenly changed radically its style. For example when hc/punk Beastie Boys changed to hip-hop in 1983. When new wave synth pop Ministry became an industrial metal act around 87. When Metallica lost himself in 90. When one of the most thrilling thrash metal bands Voivod made a psychedelic rock album Angel Rat in same year. When industrial band Laibach became a successful cover band first, and then became a synth-pop band during the years gradually. And now here is the long awaited new Lantern album Black Highways and Green Garden Roads. And as if it were made by an other band.

After their sensational wild rock’n’roll album they have released an easy, almost distortion free, sometimes dark psychedelic folk rock album, „taking ideas from the work of Hieronymus Bosch, Carl Sagan, and Mikhail Bulgakov”. „It’s an exploration of the natural world and the cosmos, and a celebration of the wonderful, the serious, and the absurd.” They also said that it’s a result of many oversteeped pots of black tea.

It was recorded at The Bottle Garden, a home studio in Montreal filled with vintage gear and an array of instruments during 22 non-sequential days over a year and a half in 2013/14. More so than previous recordings, it is a collaborative effort born of studio improvising and collective exploration. They used new, unfamiliar instruments, such as organ and kalimba, and they experimented with tape loops and group harmonies.

Really fine songs – except for the cover version of Solomon Burke’s Cry To Me from 1962. It’s a mistake, just like the Rolling Stones’ version. (Listen to the original one.) The songs come Roy Orbison, 60s Rolling Stones, psychedelic era Voivod, and Illés (Hungarian beat legend) to my mind. And there is the bass theme of Dead Kennedys’ Holiday in Cambodia in the song We Are Here:

But the album is too long. And unfortunately badly edited, so it is hard to listen from first to last. It would have been better if there an LP with 10 songs and an EP with 4 (He Is A Pinball; Wait, Wait; Cry To Me; We Are Here Again) had been released.
